At its best, mentorship provides the personal and professional foundation for lifelong career achievement and scientific discovery.

The Department of Medicine Mentorship Committee’s mission is to improve the quality and consistency of mentorship in the Department of Medicine and to educate all faculty about the value and conduct of mentorship.

The committee leads initiatives to improve the quality of mentoring relationships. They also select the recipients of the annual William J. Bremner Endowed Mentorship awards.

Mentoring is a key element in academic success and can take many forms, both formal and informal. The Department of Medicine has a strong commitment to and culture of mentoring.

Our goal is to provide a mentor for every junior faculty member.

How do I get a mentor?

Your mentor should have been assigned to you either in your offer letter or at the time of your appointment as part of your onboarding. If you do not yet have a mentor, please contact your division head.

Mentor Training Program

The Dept. of Medicine has collaborated with faculty from the UW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to develop an interactive, multi-session mentor training course designed to develop skills essential to mentoring across research, education, and clinical care.

Skills in mentorship are essential to the success of faculty; and new NIH requirements now mandate the training of research mentors to participate in post-doctoral research training programs.

Available to all faculty across all tracks, this course meets all of the new requirements from the NIH, but has been specifically designed to apply not only to research mentorship, but also mentoring in the clinical and educational arenas in academic medicine.
