OverviewStaff scholarship awards

The Department of Medicine Staff Scholarships promote staff professional development by helping pay for the cost of classes, conferences, meetings, and workshops that further one’s career and benefit the work of the department and division.

Guidelines

Calls for applications will be held twice annually in April and October. Funding may be provided for full or partial expenses.

Scholarships will be provided for areas of professional development including but not limited to educational expenses, UW Professional Organizational Development classes, university classes, certificate programs, attendance with or without travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars, and publication costs.

Scholarship funds may not be used for dependent child care, purchase of equipment, or previous expenditures including deficits or repayment of loans.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be regular full- or part-time (at least 50% FTE) classified or professional staff in the Department of Medicine for a minimum of six months before the application deadline. Staff on temporary/project appointments are not eligible.
  2. Applications must be submitted for future training opportunities; funding will not be provided to reimburse prior professional development activities. Activities must be completed within one year of the award.
  3. Staff are eligible to receive one scholarship every other academic year.
  4. The maximum award is $2,500.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be rated by a selection committee based on the goals for the activity, and how the activity relates to the applicant’s professional development and/or role in the division/department.

The number of scholarships awarded each cycle will be based on the total amount requested by all applicants as well as the number and quality of the applications themselves.

Selection committee members are not eligible for scholarship funds and must recuse themselves if a conflict of interest arises around any given application.

Application Process

Interested staff members complete the application, gain supervisory approval, and commit to providing a post-scholarship/post-educational experience to the division/department in the form of a presentation or written summary of the experience.
