Overview

The goal of the mock study section process is to provide early and constructive feedback to fellows and early career faculty submitting career development awards or first R01s to increase success of obtaining extramural funding during critical career transition points. This program will be supported by the Department of Medicine central research team.

Eligibility

Members of the UW Department of Medicine are eligible to submit grants for formal review.

Study section members

Each grant will be reviewed by two individuals who are assigned roles as primary reviewer or secondary reviewer. Reviewers will ideally be Associate or Full Professors with relevant scientific expertise who have/are serving on NIH study sections. Reviewers can be from within or outside the Department of Medicine. We will ask applicant and their mentor to provide a potential list of reviewers. The Department of Medicine central team will also assist in finding appropriate reviewers if needed. The central team will contact potential reviewers and provide relevant review documents. The primary and secondary reviewers are asked to read the application and supporting documents before the mock study session and be prepared to provide a score for each of the review criteria. Brief, written comments are optional.

Timing and procedures

Applicants are required to submit their grant material 8 weeks prior to the grant submission deadline (there will be no exceptions to this rule). Mock study sections will take place approximately 2-3 weeks after submission of materials (e.g. approximately 6 weeks prior to the grant submission deadline). Study sections will one hour in duration and will occur either by zoom or in-person based on the panel’s preference, and will be organized by the Department of Medicine central team.

Structure of the mock study section

The applicant will be present during the review. They are welcome to invite mentors/other key collaborators to also attend.

The grant review session will be organized as follows:

  • Initial scores will be presented by the reviewers
  • The primary reviewer introduces the application and specific aims, gives their overall impression and goes point- by-point through the scored review criteria (10-15 minutes)

  • The secondary reviewer adds any comments/concerns not specifically addressed by the primary reviewer (5-10 minutes)

  • Discussion is opened to the applicant and his/her mentor(s) to ask for clarification and follow-up from the reviewers (10-20 minutes)

  • Wrap up and final comments (5-10 minutes)

Please contact Nisha Bansal MD (nbansal@uw.edu) ~12 weeks prior to the sponsor deadline if you are interested in having your grant reviewed by the DOM mock study section.
