Overview
The Bruce C. Gilliland Award for Excellence in Teaching of Residents and Fellows is awarded annually to the faculty member who is actively engaged in clinical and didactic training or in the implementation of a graduate medical education curriculum.
The award is named for the late Dr. Bruce Gilliland, professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology and professor of laboratory medicine. He was known for his skills and compassion as a clinician, his many contributions to the field of rheumatology, his service as an administrator in the School of Medicine, and his dedication to teaching residents and fellows.
Candidates for this award should exemplify attributes similar to those that Dr. Gilliland demonstrated during his career in medicine. Candidates must be actively engaged in clinical and didactic training or in the implementation of graduate medical education curriculum.
Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching over time and must have served for a least three years within UW Medicine or an affiliated training site as a teacher of residents and /or fellows.
Nomination guidelines
- Complete the nomination form (see below for components to include)
- Submit two additional letters of recommendation
- At least one letter should be from a faculty member
- The other letter should be from a UW resident or fellow
- Send nomination packet to Tammy Ramirez in the UW GME Office.

*Briefly summarize important points listed above and include any unusual or unique attributes. For example, an important point might be that the nominee is a widely recognized, highly respected leader and expert in the field of medicine. An unusual attribute might be that he/she has been the program director for a residency or fellowship program.
Timeline
The call for nominations and nomination deadline is in August/September of each year.
