The Visiting Scholars Program (VSP) is a funded program designed to give students with diverse backgrounds a chance to experience the training that the University of Washington Department of Medicine has to offer.
History
We welcomed our first Visiting Scholar, Christopher Ghiathi, in October 2015.
"An emphasis on serving disadvantaged patients was part of what drew me to Morehouse School of Medicine, and I relished the opportunity to train at an institution that shares the same mission.”
Program
Visiting students will spend four weeks on an internal medicine elective at the University of Washington Medical Center or Harborview Medical Center and care for a variety of patients in our tertiary care centers.
During their time in Seattle students will be able to meet with various residents and faculty to ensure that the UW is a place they would like to train.
Students selected for the VSP will receive funding for their travel and lodging expenses. In addition, accepted applicants will receive an invitation to interview with the internal medicine residency program during the usual interview season.
Eligibility
The program is open to visiting medical students who demonstrate both academic excellence and an interest in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion through their life experiences and/or efforts confronting inequities.
Those who have overcome significant barriers and/or traveled a great distance to become a physician are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should be strongly motivated to pursue a career in internal medicine or any of its subspecialties.
The program is limited to students currently enrolled in a US medical school.
Application
VSP applicants do not need to complete a general Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) prior to applying to the VSP. If students are accepted to the VSP program, they will then be asked to register and upload UWSOM credentialing paperwork that any visiting student is expected to complete.
Students not accepted to the VSP can still apply to the UWSOM for a regular visiting elective.
Accepted applicants will need to submit one of their allotted program signals through ERAS when applying to residency program.
