In addition to wound healing and treating skin disorders, our faculty in the Division of Dermatology diagnose, treat, and prevent skin cancers.
Merkel cell carcinoma
Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare skin cancer, but even more deadly than the better known melanoma. Dr. Paul Nghiem, professor and head of the Division of Dermatology, has received the 2015 Alfred Marchionini Research Prize for his work on Merkel cell carcinoma. Nghiem leads a clinical trial for patients with advanced stages of the disease that is showing promising early results.
Immunotherapy: Hope for Merkel cell carcinoma
Dr. Paul Nghiem is leading a clinical trial of an immunotherapy drug, pembrolizumab, where just over half of patients with advanced cancers saw their tumor shrink or disappear after receiving the immune-boosting drug.
