The mission of the University of Washington Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Center for Transformative Research (UW-JEDICTR) is to study and ultimately eliminate health disparities by promoting the principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the research of vulnerable populations, and by increasing the recruitment, retention and advancement of students, residents, fellows, and faculty from groups under-represented in medicine.
Health Disparities are prevalent in the US and worldwide and contribute significantly to morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. Health disparities disproportionately affect communities of color, other vulnerable and marginalized populations, as well as rural populations.
Diversity in the medical workforce improves our ability to interact with our communities and contributes to excellence in patient care, community interaction and service and decreases health disparities.
The foundation of health disparities research includes evaluation of the intersection of social, biologic, and environmental forces as well as justice and access to healthcare. Disruption of health disparities will include supporting the pipeline of potential researchers, which is necessary to identify disparities, who have the tools to conduct translational research in order to transform our health care system.
Research in how distributive justice, equity, diversity and inclusion are intertwined are necessary in order to find solutions to contributors of health disparities.
