IT Connect is the University of Washington's IT unit. This group provides general campus support with a focus on teaching activities. IT Connect provides only the most basic IT support to staff/faculty/post-doctoral fellows. Basic support includes use of the UW web-based email system using one’s UW NetID. This system is referred to as Web Alpine.
Additional network support may be purchased by academic units allowing use of an exchange system to use web interfaces such as Outlook. This email account is available to use as a forwarding service after separation from UW employment.
UW Deskmail/Web Alpine
UW (Deskmail) Email (also known as UW Deskmail or Web Alpine) is a basic email service developed at the UW.
UW Exchange/Outlook Web App
UW Exchange (Outlook Web App) is a service that offers integrated email, calendaring, contacts, and task management through Microsoft Outlook, Web browsers, and mobile devices.
UW Google Mail
UW Google Email is available as part of the UW Google Apps service, which also includes Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sites, and more.
Your personal UW NetID (and its password) provides access to many UW online services including MyUW and UW Email. Your UW NetID verifies who you are, ensures the privacy of your personal information, and restricts the use of UW resources to authorized users. MyUW includes Employee Self Service, where you can view/modify your personal UW information (payroll, benefits, UW directory listing, emergency contact, etc.)
MyUW is the portal of the University of Washington. Logging in with your UW NetID gives you access to Web resources you need to fulfill your goals at the University. Based on your affiliations with the University, MyUW provides a personalized set of resources.
Department of Medicine IT
The Department of Medicine IT Services group provides fee-based network support. These accounts are often referred to as Outpost accounts and are authorized by your division administrator. Account fees are charged to the division based on level of account support (full accounts include use of Outlook as a mail management tool, data backup, storage and software updates).
Requests for specialized services (e.g., excess storage for research data) is paid for by individuals using research funding.
Email addresses for these accounts are: UW NetID or other assigned user name @ medicine.washington.edu. The Outpost account should be set up to draw email from both the @uw.edu and @medicine.washington.edu email addresses so that they can be used interchangeably. Outgoing email will reflect the @medicine.washington.edu address.
Remote access to outpost email is available via the Outlook Web App.
Outpost accounts are reviewed and audited monthly and terminated at time of separation from UW employment.
UW Medicine computing services
UW Medicine Computing Services accounts are required if you need to access computers via UW Medicine networks (e.g., HMC employees located in the Central Tower). These accounts were previously referred to as AMC accounts (Academic Medical Center) and continue to be referred to as such in certain venues. UW Medicine accounts are required for all clinicians who provide clinical care in UW Medicine facilities (not the VA) in order to access EMRs as well as by clinical research team members who require access to patient data in the course of their job. UW Medicine accounts must be assigned either clinical or non-clinical access. EMR access is limited to those in clinical roles or IRB approved investigators.
A separate email account is not established by UW Medicine Computer Services; you will use your UW NetID to access UW Medicine networks and resources, but you will have a different password.
UW Medicine accounts are audited regularly and are not accessible after separation from UW employment.
