Gender equality is when people of all genders have equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities. Gender equity is correcting historical wrongs that have left people behind. Gender equity is the way to achieve gender equality.

The Department of Medicine has purchased an Institutional & Public Viewing License of Picture a Scientist, a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Please contact us for more information.
QMED mentorship program recruitment
The UW Queer Medical Student Association has begun development of a mentorship program to support UW LGBTQIA+ students and trainees. Mentorship and other professional development opportunities, especially for under-represented groups in medicine, are essential for an equitable and inclusive culture in our community. If you are interested in participating as a mentor/mentee, please email Dr. Mariebeth Velasquez.
In a further effort to strengthen our commitment to LGBTQ+ equity, the newly established DOM Gender Equity Council (GEC) will provide stewardship for the department’s actions to promote gender equity with particular consideration for:
- Retention and Career Advancement
- Employment
- Family Support
- Outreach and Visibility
- LGBTQ+ Support
